Prior to joining SMA, Jan was a professor of medicine at the Karolinska Institutet with focus on infectious diseases, Deputy President of the Karolinska Institute and Research Director of Region Stockholm. Also, Jan was a member of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine. He was awarded the Feinstein Institute, New York award for science and education in 2007.
